Materials and processing

Why did we decide in favour of genuine leather?

We believe in materials that last, so there was no question for us that we would work with 100% real leather for our bags. Compared to artificial alternatives, leather is more durable, repairable, breathable and stable. The myth that animals are bred and slaughtered exclusively for leather production is widespread, but leather is a by-product of the food industry. Without further processing, it would be disposed of in large quantities, with all the negative consequences for the environment and resources. By utilising it, we are giving this valuable natural material a second life.

What makes our leather special

Not all leather is the same. Many brands use split leather, the thinner lower layer of the animal hide, and compensate for the lower quality with layers of colour, embossing or artificial graining. This may look high-quality, but it does not achieve the natural structure, durability and longevity of full-grain leather. Full-grain leather comes from the upper layer of the skin and is characterised by robustness, natural grain, a significantly longer lifespan and a high-quality feel.

For our Inea business bag, we use nappa leather, a particularly soft, supple full-grain leather from the uppermost layer of the skin. It has a luxurious feel, develops a unique patina over time and makes each piece one of a kind. Nappa leather combines durability, a natural feel and an elegant appearance in one material.

Even though our products have to withstand a lot in everyday use, it was important to us to emphasise the character of high-quality leather and to ensure that our leather is not only beautiful but also responsible, we work exclusively with Leather Working Group (LWG)-certified tanneries. The LWG checks the environmental standards of the tanneries and ensures that water, energy and chemical consumption and disposal meet sustainability standards, guaranteeing that every Milène is produced in an environmentally conscious way.

Bombé effect in selected areas:

‘Bombé’ comes from the French and means “curved” or ‘padded’. The bombé effect gives the bag depth and elegance. The gentle curvature harmonises the lines and makes the design more three-dimensional without being overloaded. With Milène, the bombé effect is used specifically on small details to create subtle accents that enhance the overall look of the bag without detracting from its simple elegance.

Fine seams and reinforcements

Precisely crafted seams ensure the longevity of every Milène bag and emphasise the craftsmanship. The even stitching prevents the leather from fraying and ensures that the bag retains its shape even with daily use. Reinforcements are specifically placed in high-wear areas such as corners, handle attachments or bag bottoms to protect against wear, increase stability and guarantee that functionality and elegance will last for a long time.

Lining

Our inner lining made from recycled cotton and polyester impresses with its elegant feel. In natural beige with a fine structure, it conveys robustness and value and emphasises the high-quality overall experience of every Milène bag.

High-quality metal accessories

We pay attention to the processing of high-quality metal accessories that are robust and elegant. Our decorative clasp in particular is finished with a glossy cathodic dip coating process. This involves dipping the metal parts evenly in a lacquer solution and coating them electrically - the result is a scratch-resistant, durable surface with an elegant sheen that emphasises the quality and style of every Milène bag.
